Essential Tips for Safely Demolishing and Hauling Away a Concrete Fence Wall- Watch the Video Action- Light Demolition Services

Updated: Dec 9

A short story about our light demolition services that we offer to Indianapolis area residents and businesses!

As the soil beneath a fence gradually settles over time, it begins to sag noticeably. This settling process can be a result of various factors such as moisture variations, soil composition, and even the weight of the fence itself. Eventually, this compromised soil structure will reach a point where it can no longer support the weight of the fence, leading to a precarious situation where the fence may topple over. If the fence in question is constructed from concrete, the consequences of such a collapse could be quite severe, potentially causing significant damage to surrounding property, vehicles, or even posing a risk to individuals nearby. In one particular neighborhood, there is a segment of a concrete fence wall that is alarmingly poised to fall due to the aforementioned settling dirt. Its precarious position means that it could collapse at any moment, creating an urgent need for intervention. Naturally, in order to prevent this potential disaster from occurring, we have determined that the most effective course of action is to remove the leaning portion of the fence before it causes any harm.

The fence we are tasked with removing today is a reinforced concrete masonry wall, a structure that is designed for durability and longevity. This type of construction involves the use of a mesh of rebar embedded within the concrete, which serves to strengthen the wall from the inside and provide additional support against various stresses. However, this very reinforcement also presents a challenge when it comes to demolishing the wall. The presence of rebar complicates the process significantly, as we will need to expose the rebar first before we can effectively break down the wall into manageable chunks. But how do we go about penetrating the thick concrete to reveal the hidden rebar? The answer lies in the use of a concrete breaker hammer!

The concrete breaker operates similarly to a jackhammer, utilizing a pneumatic chisel that repeatedly pounds against the concrete surface. With this powerful tool in hand, we begin the process by punching several small holes into the concrete wall. This methodical approach allows us to gradually remove enough material to eventually expose the rebar that lies within the concrete. Once we have successfully revealed the rebar, it is time to transition to the next phase of our demolition process, which involves the use of a cut-off saw.

This specialized disc saw is remarkably efficient at cutting through rebar, and its operation produces enough sparks to create a dazzling display that resembles fireworks lighting up the sky! This visual spectacle is a byproduct of the powerful cutting action as we work to sever the rebar, ensuring that we can dismantle the wall effectively. With the wall now split into two segments, we find ourselves facing another challenge: even these halves are still too large to fit comfortably on our truck, necessitating further cuts. To manage this, we repeat the same process we employed earlier, utilizing our jackhammer-style attachment once again to expose the rebar in each segment. After exposing the rebar, we proceed with our cut-off machine to slice through the metal, transforming the wall into four more-or-less equally sized pieces that are now manageable for transportation.

With the wall successfully cut down into smaller sections, we can now load these pieces onto our truck. Using our mini skid steer’s grapple attachment, we carefully layer the segments on top of one another, ensuring they are stacked securely for the journey ahead. Once loaded, we are ready to transport the debris to its next destination. However, our work is not yet complete, as we must also address the cleanup of the rubble that remains on the ground. The extensive hammering and sawing we performed have left behind a significant pile of concrete debris and loose rebar scattered across the site. To effectively clear this mess, we begin by clumping the debris together using a hand rake, gathering it into manageable piles. Following this, we utilize our trusty bucket attachment to scoop up the rubble, efficiently transferring it into the back of our truck. With the area now cleared of all concrete remnants, we can confidently declare that there is no longer any threat of the wall collapsing, ensuring the safety of the surrounding environment.
